Hello, I'm Zainab Ahmed, a New Yorker embarking on a journey that uncovers the often overlooked struggles of aging parents in the bustling metropolis. Join me as I delve into the lives of elderly individuals who, amidst the vibrant city life, often find themselves grappling with solitude and isolation.

The Beginnings:
In the shadows of towering skyscrapers, the narratives of our elderly parents often remain obscured. Their stories, enriched with wisdom and experiences, fade into the background as the city's pulse continues to race forward. My journey seeks to amplify their voices and bring their needs to the forefront.

Unseen Struggles:
The pain point that tugs at my heart is the isolation that many aging parents experience. The same streets that buzz with energy can become alienating for those whose mobility may be limited, and whose social circles may have dwindled. The solitude that cloaks them can be a heavy burden to bear, aching in silence.

Neglected Wisdom:
Our parents carry a lifetime of knowledge and insight, yet the city's pace often leaves little room for their stories to be heard. The struggle to retain relevance and remain engaged in a rapidly changing world can be disheartening. Their experiences, once cherished, risk fading away like forgotten footprints in the sand.

Cultural Ties:
For immigrant parents, the challenges are compounded by the distance from their homelands and the fading echoes of their cultural heritage. The yearning for connection, familiar faces, and traditions can cast a shadow of homesickness even in a city as diverse as NYC.

Community Revival:
My journey is a quest to revitalize the sense of community that is so essential to our parents' well-being. Through shared stories, gatherings, and initiatives, we can weave a safety net of companionship. It's about ensuring that their twilight years are colored with the vibrancy of human connection.

Breaking the Silence:
By shining a light on these forgotten narratives, I hope to spark a collective awakening. It's time to rekindle the reverence for our aging parents, to cherish the stories that have shaped us, and to acknowledge that their presence enriches our lives just as much as our presence enhances theirs.

A Call to Action:
Let's transform the city's landscape into one where the elderly are not just seen but celebrated. Together, we can create an environment that values their experiences, fosters companionship, and bridges generations. It's a call to every New Yorker to extend a hand of friendship and break the cycle of isolation.

In unity and compassion,

Why New York?
Here are the latest trends in the NYC real estate market as well as the statewide market. A prolonged scarcity of properties on the market, along with high prices and high mortgage rates, continues to impede the New York housing market. According to the housing report released by the New York State Association of REALTORS®, the number of properties for sale declined for the 37th straight month in year-over-year comparisons, while mortgage rates remain more than double what they were at this time last year.

The number of available properties for sale fell by 12%, from 40,321 in November 2021 to 36,490 this month. In year-over-year comparisons, the months' supply of dwellings stayed unchanged at 3.2 months. Months' supply is the number of months it would take to sell the present inventory of homes at the current sales rate. A balanced market has a supply of six to six and a half months.
Graph depicting the median sale price trend in New York, NY, from 2018 to 2023. The line graph shows two trends: one for New York with prices fluctuating around $800K, indicated in black, and another for the United States overall, with prices around the $400K mark, shown in orange.
